Who We AreCharlene Pereira: BA (Hons) Police Studies, MA Counselling, PhD (Criminology) Candidate Charlene has 15 years experience working with young and adult offenders within the criminal justice system. She was active in the implementation of creative compliance strategies in working with ‘at risk’ youth, and was a key stakeholder in the development of the state-wide client service planning and assessment tool. In 1999 she was awarded by the Department of Justice for achieving a consistently high standard of work performance in a difficult and challenging environment. In 2002 Charlene worked in the non-government sector managing a multi-disciplinary team addressing the criminogenic needs of young people to divert them from entering and/or progressing further through the criminal justice system. Following this position, she worked as the Senior Policy and Program Advisor for the Department of Human Services, Youth Justice and Youth Services Branch. She was responsible for restorative justice and diversion programs. This included the development and monitoring of the state-wide implementation of the group conferencing program as a pre-sentence option within the criminal division of the Children’s Courts. Within academia, Charlene has extensive experience in the delivery and development of educational modules across a number of disciplines including the Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology at Monash University, Bachelor of Social Science at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, Advanced Diploma in Justice Studies at RMIT and Diploma of Community Welfare at Stott’s College. In 2005 she was awarded for high achievement in the Master in Counselling. At present, her Ph D research is concerned with the development of a gender responsive case management approach to violent young women. Currently in her role as a private practitioner at Forensic Assessment & Intervention Service (FAIS), she continues to contribute to best case practice within the criminal justice system on a consultative level with the Victorian Department of Human Services- Youth Justice Branch and the Victorian Department of Justice.
